A BRIEF REVIEW ON QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF DIFFERENT MARKETED TURMERIC POWDERS AVAILABLE IN TAMIL NADU

. Abstract Turmeric a bright yellow spice obtained from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa is an important medicinal plant, whose products are marketed as turmeric powder. curcuminoid is the principle constituent present in turmeric. There are so many brands available for selling turmeric powder. Everyone claiming to be the best. Even the most expensive product it is still no surety of quality of powder. In the present study four different turmeric powder samples were taken from Tamil Nadu market and a comparative organoleptic, physical, chemical evaluation was done to compare the quality of these different samples. Result all the selected brand samples are of better quality. They have less ash value showing less earthy and mineral impurity and more extractive values showing increased amount of curcuminoids. Percentage of curcumin content was estimated by UV visible spectroscopy for each sample. Adulterant evaluation studies show absence of adulterant in each sample.
