Abstract

Purpose: A woman's health is crucial for her family, society, and culture, as any physical or mental disruption can affect her regular menstrual cycle. In Ayurveda, most of the menstrual disorders are defined under headings of Artava-vyapada and Ashta Artava dushti. Asrigdara is one of the Artava-vyapada characterized by excessive, irregular uterine bleeding P/V. It also known as Pradara. It is Rakta pradoshaja vyadhi in which Pitta-vata pradhana tridosha dushti occurs. Asrigdara should be managed with medications that primarily possess kashaya, madhura rasa and sheeta guna having pitta shamaka and vata anulomaka properties as it mainly results from the vitiation of vata and pitta doshas. Treatment described for Raktapitta, Raktatisara and Raktarsha are recommended for Asrigdara also. Eladi Kwath is one of the classical formulations mentioned in Harita Samhita in Raktapitta Chikitsa Adhyaya. She advised for certain investigations including ultrasonography, treated with Eladi Kwath 40 ml twice a day on empty stomach for 3 consecutive months. Result: There was relief in amount of bleeding and duration of menses. There was significant change in previously short cycled menses. Conclusion: Eladi Kwath can be considered as effective oral compound for management of Asrigdara as it regularizes menstrual cycle including correcting excessive blood loss during menses.
