KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY: A QUESTIONNAIRE STUDY AMONG DENTAL PRACTITIONERS AND POST GRADUATE TRAINEES
Monisha R.*, Sowmiya and Veni Ashok
. Abstract Background: The advent of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) has revolutionized diagnostic and treatment practices in dentistry, providing three-dimensional visualization of oral and maxillofacial structures. Aim: This study aimed to assess and compare the knowledge and attitudes toward CBCT among general dentists and postgraduate trainees in Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital, Tamil Nadu. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in January 2025, involving 101 participants who responded to a structured, validated questionnaire. The survey focused on aspects such as awareness, usage frequency, applications, and challenges of CBCT in endodontics. Results: The results revealed that while 99% of participants were aware of CBCT’s diagnostic role in endodontics, its usage was selective, with 51.5% using it once a month. Most participants recognized its benefits in treatment planning and visualization, with 92.1% agreeing that CBCT improved treatment success rates. However, barriers like high cost, lack of training, and radiation concerns were prevalent. Chi-square analysis highlighted significant differences in perceptions between general dentists and postgraduate trainees, with the latter valuing treatment planning more, while general dentists emphasized improved visualization. Conclusion: The study concluded that despite a positive outlook on CBCT, further integration of CBCT into dental education is necessary to overcome challenges related to cost, training, and confidence, ultimately enhancing patient care and treatment outcomes.
