Abstract Diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia, poses a significant global health burden. Conventional management strategies focus on lifestyle modifications and pharmacological interventions. However, the potential role of herbal plants in the prevention and control of diabetes mellitus has garnered increasing scientific and public interest. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of diabetes mellitus, including its pathophysiology and complications, and to explore the current evidence regarding the use of various herbal plants in its prevention and management. We will examine the mechanisms of action attributed to specific plant extracts and their bioactive compounds, drawing upon in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. Furthermore, this review will address the challenges and limitations associated with the use of herbal remedies, including issues of standardization, safety, and potential interactions with conventional medications. The ultimate goal is to critically evaluate the scientific basis for incorporating herbal interventions as complementary strategies in the prevention and control of diabetes mellitus, highlighting areas requiring further rigorous investigation and emphasizing the importance of informed and evidencebased decision-making.
