Abstract

Ayurveda, the ancient and holistic science of life, emphasizes the preventive aspect of health over the curative. It outlines essential principles such as Dosha, Dushya, Srotasa, Vyadhi Utpatti, and Vyadhi Chikitsa, with Nidana (causative factor) playing a fundamental role in the origin and progression of diseases. Acharya Charaka has introduced the concept of Nidānārthakara Roga, which refers to a disease that itself becomes the cause of another disease. In this context, the first appearing condition is termed the primary disease, while the resulting one is considered secondary. This concept is of growing relevance in the modern era, where lifestyle disorders are increasingly prevalent. Depression, a significant global health issue, not only causes profound psychological distress but also serves as a causative factor (Nidana) for several systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions. Despite being primarily classified as a mental illness, depression influences bodily functions and contributes to the development of secondary diseases through both physiological and behavioral mechanisms. Understanding the Nidānārthakaratva of depression is crucial in present-day clinical practice to enable early intervention and holistic preventive care. This article explores the classical Ayurvedic view of Nidānārthakaratva Vyadhi, with an in-depth focus on depression as a primary disorder leading to secondary pathologies, highlighting the importance of integrative approaches in contemporary healthcare.

Keywords: Ayurveda, Nidanarthakara Roga, Depression, Lifestyle Disorders Secondary Disease.
