AYURVEDIC CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING OF CHITTODVEGA W.S.R. TO ANXIETY DISORDERS
Dr. Anjali Punia* and Dr. Rakesh Pawar
. Abstract Background: Mental disorders like anxiety are increasingly prevalent in modern society. In Ayurveda, such conditions are discussed under the umbrella of Manasika Vyadhi, among which Chittodvega is the most relevant counterpart to anxiety disorders. This term signifies instability or agitation of the Chitta (mind), primarily due to imbalance of Raja, Tama, and Vata Dosha. Aim and Objectives, Aim: To explore and analyze the Ayurvedic concept of Chittodvega in relation to modern anxiety disorders. Objectives: To study the classical Ayurvedic references related to Chittodvega. To understand the etiology (Nidana), pathogenesis (Samprapti), and symptoms (Lakshana) of Chittodvega. To review therapeutic approaches including Sattvavajaya, Medhya Rasayana, and Panchakarma. To establish a clinical correlation between Chittodvega and modern anxiety disorders. To evaluate the scope of integrative management using Ayurveda in anxiety disorders. Methods: A detailed review of classical Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Sushruta Samhita, and Bhavaprakasha was undertaken. Modern medical literature was also reviewed for comparative analysis of anxiety disorders. Key Ayurvedic principles such as Triguna, Tridosha, Manovaha Srotas, and Sattvavajaya Chikitsa were studied and interpreted in context. Results: Chittodvega emerges as a Vata-predominant Manasika Vikara involving perturbation of Manasika Doshas (Raja and Tama). Causative factors include mental stress, improper diet and lifestyle, and emotional disturbances. Clinical features such as restlessness, palpitations, insomnia, and fear align well with anxiety symptoms in modern psychiatry. Therapeutic approaches include Medhya Rasayana, Sattvavajaya, Daivavyapashraya, and supportive Yukti Vyapashraya Chikitsa. Conclusion: Chittodvega is a well-described entity in Ayurveda resembling modern anxiety disorder. Ayurvedic management offers a holistic and individualized approach that includes diet, lifestyle, herbal formulations, and psychospiritual interventions. Understanding Chittodvega through both classical and modern lenses promotes integrative care for anxiety disorders. Keywords: Chittodvega, Manasika Vikara, Raja, Tama, Sattvavajaya Chikitsa, Anxiety Disorder. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
