FORMULATION OF JAMUN SEED TABLETS AS A NATURAL ANTI-DIABETIC AGENT
Rambahadur R. Maurya* and Bhavika J. Tandel
Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a major and growing health concern worldwide, leading to severe complications like heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision impairment. While conventional treatments such as insulin and oral drugs are commonly used, they often come with high costs, side effects, and limited accessibility. This has sparked a rising interest in natural approaches to managing the disease. Jamun (Syzygium cumini), also known as Indian blackberry, has long been used in traditional medicine, particularly for its antidiabetic properties. Although the fruit is consumed for its nutritional value, the seeds are especially valued for their ability to regulate blood sugar. Rich in active compounds like flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, and glycosides, Jamun seeds help enhance insulin sensitivity, reduce oxidative stress, and control glucose levels. Scientific research supports these benefits, showing that Jamun seed extracts can inhibit enzymes like alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, slowing carbohydrate breakdown and reducing postmeal glucose spikes. They also improve glucose uptake and insulin function, making them useful in managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Jamun seed powder is generally safe, affordable, and available in various forms such as capsules, powders, extracts, and teas. However, more clinical research is needed to establish standard dosages and long-term safety. Overall, Jamun seeds offer a natural, accessible, and effective supplement to conventional diabetes therapies, with growing potential for integration into modern healthcare systems.
