A CLINICAL STUDY ON THE EFFICACY OF ROHITAK ABHAYA KWATH IN THE MANAGEMENT OF NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD)
*Dr. Neelim Shyam Bharali, Dr. Shyamanta Kalita and Dr. Anup Baishya
Abstract Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has emerged as one of the most prevalent forms of chronic liver pathology globally, marked by the accumulation of lipid content within hepatocytes in individuals with negligible alcohol consumption. This condition often progresses silently and is strongly associated with lifestyle-related factors such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance.[1,2] Although various pharmacological interventions are available, they often offer only partial or symptomatic relief, necessitating alternative, holistic approaches. Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine, describes numerous herbs with hepatoprotective, metabolic, and digestive benefits.[3,4] Among these, Rohitak (Tecomella undulata) and Abhaya (Terminalia chebula) have long been mentioned in classical texts for their therapeutic efficacy in hepatic ailments.[3,4,5] The present clinical investigation was conducted to assess the therapeutic effect of Rohitak Abhaya Kwath in the management of NAFLD. This open-labeled, single-arm interventional study was carried out in the Department of Kayachikitsa, Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Jalukbari, Guwahati, Assam. A total of 30 patients meeting the diagnostic criteria for NAFLD were administered the trial formulation over a period of 60 days. Improvements were assessed through symptomatic evaluation, biochemical liver function tests, and ultrasonographic imaging. The findings suggested significant clinical and laboratory improvements, supporting the potential utility of Ayurvedic formulations in the integrative management of NAFLD.
