Vivek Sharma*, Muskan Nagpal and Dr. Aditi Chauhan M. D. (AY)
. Abstract Ocimum sanctum Linn., commonly known as Tulsi or Holy Basil, is a sacred and medicinal plant deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual traditions of India, particularly within Ayurveda. This widely branched, commonly found near Hindu households and temples due to its religious significance and therapeutic value. Tulsi's medicinal use extends across its leaves, seeds, and roots, which contain a wide range of bioactive compounds. Among the most prominent constituents are eugenol, a volatile essential oil, and ursolic acid, a triterpenoid known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The chemical complexity of Tulsi contributes to its broad pharmacological profile, making standardization difficult but highlighting its unique medicinal potential. Extensive scientific studies have confirmed its multifaceted therapeutic effects, including anti-stress, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antipyretic, antidiuretic, antidiabetic, antimalarial, and hypolipidemic properties. Tulsi has demonstrated efficacy in managing metabolic disorders, enhancing immune function, and protecting against various environmental and psychological stressors. In Ayurvedic medicine, Tulsi is traditionally used either alone or in combination with other herbs to treat a wide range of conditions, such as chronic respiratory disorders (e.g., bronchitis, asthma), fever, anxiety, skin diseases, and bites from venomous animals like snakes and scorpions. Its adaptogenic and neuroprotective effects also contribute to its use in promoting mental clarity and emotional balance. Despite the challenges in achieving pharmaceutical standardization, Tulsi’s wide margin of safety, combined with its therapeutic versatility, makes it a valuable herb for integrative and holistic health practices. Its role in promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being underscores its significance as a cornerstone of Ayurvedic pharmacotherapy. Keywords: Tulsi, Ayurveda, Ocimum sanctum, Terpinols.
