FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF HERBAL GEL OF KIGELIA AFRICANA
Fatehalrahman F. Magbool* and Shayoub M. E.
. Abstract Burns is a tissue damage caused by contact with hot objects, chemical electrical and radiation. Damage caused by burns can come to the subcutaneous tissue, dermis and epidermis depends on the length of exposure to the causative factor. Burns are usually expressed by degrees, depending on the extent of tissue damaged by burns proficiency level. At burns, body fluids such as water and serum will be out. This condition is a good medium for microbial growth. Medicinal plants play an important role in the discovery of novel drugs used in modern medicine. Kigelia africana preliminary studies have shown a high concentration of bioactive compounds and traditionally used for treatment of Inflammation, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Arthritis, and possess anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and antiinflammatory activities. Gel are the semisolid form of drug dosage mainly introduced for the easy dispersion of drug through the mucosa and skin surface. The aim of the present research work is to explore new alternatives for the treatment of skin burn and inflammation. Accordingly, the main objectives are to formulate, design and develop a stable, efficacious, and safe skin gel of kigelia africana extract. The gel formulation was designed by using carbopol 940 as gel forming polymer, propylene glycol, methyl paraben, propyl paraben and required amount of distilled water. The pH was maintained by drop wise addition of Tri-ethanolamine. Five different gel formulations (F1 to F5) were prepared by dispersion method, using different concentrations of carbopol 940, and they were evaluated using official and non-official experiments including organoleptic properties, pH, spreadability, extrudability and viscosity and drug content uniformity. The stability study for the developed gel formulation was done as per ICH guidelines. The overall pharmaceutical acceptability were satisfactory for the developed gels regarding chemical and physical investigations. The viscosity of gels was significantly (P Keywords: Kigelia africana, Bioactive compounds, Burns, Carbopol 940, Inflammation, Medicinal plants. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
