A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON VINCA ALKALOIDS IN CANCER TREATMENT
*Ansuman Verma, Sarita Verma, Ankit Verma
. Abstract Vinca alkaloids are a type of anti-mitotic and anti-microtubule medicines that are widely employed in cancer chemotherapy. They are extracted from the Catharanthus roseus plant. Vincristine, vinblastine, vindesine, vinorelbine, and vinflunine are among the main constituents. These substances mostly work by interfering with the production of microtubules, which is essential for the division of cells. Their pharmacological mechanisms, therapeutic uses, resistance mechanisms, toxicity profiles,Approximately 10 million people die from cancer each year, making it one of the most common diseases in the world. In addition to having a significant financial impact on patients, cancer treatment involves surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and medication therapy, among other procedures. Over time patients may also develop drug resistance. An important By using evidence-based preventative techniques, a significant number of cancer cases can be avoided or treated. In both industrialized and developing countries, plant-based medications have emerged as promising preventive chemotherapy alternatives. Many cancer types are treated using vinca alkaloids and their derivatives, such as vincristine, vinblastine, etc., that are extracted from Catharanthus roseus plants. Vinca alkaloids (vinblastine, vincristine, and vinorelbine) work as microtubulestabilizing agents (MTAs), which means they stop the cell cycle by altering the dynamics of microtubules. Major Vincristine Neurotoxicity is a side effect. According to review literature, several writers have utilized vincristine as an animal model to examine the effects of medications or plants by causing neuropathy in mice or rats. When treating different types of cancer, vinca alkaloids and their derivatives were frequently utilized in combination regimens with doxorubicin, procarbazine, methotrexate, dacarbazine, and cyclophosphamide, among other medications.
