AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO THE MANAGEMENT OF DIGESTIVE DISORDERS (GRAHANI): A REVIEW OF CLASSICAL PRINCIPLES AND FORMULATIONS

Abstract

Digestive health is a cornerstone of overall well-being in Ayurvedic medicine, centered on the concept of Agni, or the digestive fire. Impairment of Agni leads to a spectrum of digestive disorders, collectively known as Grahaṇī, characterized by improper digestion, nutrient malabsorption, and the formation of metabolic toxins (āma). This article reviews the classical Ayurvedic understanding of the pathophysiology, classification, and management of these disorders. The primary methods involve a multifaceted approach including dietary modifications, lifestyle adjustments, evacuative therapies for detoxification, and the administration of specific herbal and mineral formulations. Key results are presented in the form of therapeutic actions of various classical formulations, which are designed to stimulate Agni, pacify the vitiated doṣas (Vāta, Pitta, Kapha), and restore normal digestive function. The discussion synthesizes these elements, highlighting Ayurveda’s holistic and individualized strategy that aims not merely to alleviate symptoms but to address the root cause of digestive imbalance.
