PREPARATION OF TOPICAL HYDROGEL AND COMPARISON WITH A STANDARD CREAM (DICLOFENAC OINTMENT)Priyanka Bhowmik Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata-32, India. Abstract The aim of the present study was to prepare a hydro gel system for targeted drug delivery at a particular site using emulsification method. The hydro gel was composed of various polymers like PVA, acrypol of grade 934P and 971P. In this method the cross-linking done using the polymer mixture retards the release of drug. Diclofenac was used as a model drug. It is a non–steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthitis, osteoarthitis. Interaction studies performed using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy revealed that there was no drug-polymer interaction. The in-vitro drug release study was done using phosphate buffer to mimic skin pH. The release studies were also performed from a standard ointment containing diclofenac as the drug. The release of the drug was slow, controlled and extended when used as a gel than when used as an ointment. Keywords: Diclofenac, Bio adhesion, Simple Emulsification, Controlled Release.
