INCIDENCE AND ECONOMIC BURDEN OF ADVERSE DRUG REACTION AMONG PATIENTS FROM GENERAL MEDICINE DEPARTMENT TRANSFERRED TO EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Abstract AIM: The aim of the study was to estimate the incidence and cost of emergency department visits from general medicine related to ADRs. METHODS: It is a prospective observational study conducted for a period of 6months carried out in a general medicine department of tertiary care teaching hospital. The frequencies and costs of ADRs were quantified for an emergency case, identifying cost of treatment for ADRs. Decision making as to whether or not an event was causally related to a drug was made based on WHO and Naranjo causality assessment scales.RESULTS: A total number of 66 ADRs were identified in general medicine department in a period of 6 months i.e. 1.3% of patients are associated with adverse drug reactions. Among these 12 cases were shifted to AMCU due to various emergencies i.e. 18% of the patients that are having ADRs were associated with high costs. The total health care cost related to ADRs totaled 573900/- .The mean hospital stay per case is 8 days. Keywords: Adverse drug reaction, hospitalization, emergency care, economic burden.
