MAJOR GENERA OF PAPAVERACEAE (POPPY) PLANT FAMILY IN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE. PART III: GLAUCIUM (HORNED POPPY)
Abdullatif Azab*
Abstract In the first two of this series of triad articles, we reviewed the genera of Fumaria and Papaver, included in the Papaveraceae plant family of Israel and Palestine, the reviewed region, RR. In this article, we review the third major genus of this family in the RR, Glaucium. The species of this genus in the RR were significantly studied but the number of their reported medicinal properties-activities is relatively limited compared with Fumaria and Papaver. Expectedly, the chemical compositions of these species comprise active alkaloids and other compounds, yet some of these compositions are only partially known. Interestingly, the traditional uses of these species are well known and documented. So these traditional uses, as well as modern research findings, will be presented in two separate tables. Structures of selected natural products that were isolated from these plants are shown after these tables, followed by a thorough discussion. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future research will be made. Keywords: Papaveraceae, Glaucium, Glaucium flavum, Glaucium grandiflorum, Alkaloids, Ethnomedicine, Chemical composition, Anticancer, Anti-inflammatory, Neuroprotective.
