JANAPADODHWAMSA: AN AYURVEDIC FRAMEWORK FOR EPIDEMICS AND MASS CALAMITIES

Abstract Janapadodhwamsa first described in Charaka Samhita, Vimana Sthana 3—refers to large-scale destruction of human populations due to shared environmental disturbances. Although formulated over two millennia ago, the concept shows striking parallels with contemporary epidemiology, environmental health, and disaster science. This article reviews the classical foundations, etiological classifications, pathophysiology, and preventive strategies associated with Janapadodhwamsa and evaluates its relevance to modern public health frameworks.
