Abstract

ENTERIC COATING TECHNOLOGY UTILIZING POLYMERIC SYSTEM

Mr. Abhimanyu Somnath Jondhale*

Abstract

Enteric coating technology represents a vital advancement in oral drug delivery, enabling selective release of medications in the small intestine by protecting them from the acidic environment of the stomach. This review discusses the principles, mechanisms, materials, and processes involved in enteric coating, emphasizing the role of pH-sensitive polymers such as methacrylic acid copolymers, cellulose derivatives, and polyvinyl compounds. The article also highlights modern techniques including dry powder coating, hot-melt coating, and 3D printing, along with multi-layered and microbiota-triggered systems that enhance targeted delivery. Critical process parameters—such as spray rate, atomization pressure, inlet air temperature, and curing—are explored for their impact on coating quality and drug release behavior. While enteric coating offers significant advantages like protection of acid-labile drugs, reduced gastric irritation, and controlled release, challenges such as process complexity, cost, and risk of dose dumping remain. Ongoing innovations in polymers and manufacturing aim to improve stability, efficiency, and specificity of drug release. Overall, enteric coating remains a cornerstone of pharmaceutical formulation, ensuring therapeutic effectiveness, patient safety, and optimized drug delivery.

Keywords: Enteric coating, pH-sensitive polymers, drug delivery, film coating, tablet coating technology, controlled release, methacrylic acid copolymers, HPMCP, Eudragit, fluid-bed coating, perforated pan coating, delayed release, pharmaceutical formulation.
