THERAPEUTIC RATIONALE OF PATRA PINDA SWEDA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GRIDHRASI (SCIATICA)
*Dr. Nada Yasha, Dr. Manir Uddin Dewan, Dr. Jayanta Sarmah
Abstract Gridhrasi, described in Ayurveda and commonly correlated with sciatica, is a condition mainly associated with aggravated Vata, sometimes along with Kapha, leading to radiating pain, stiffness, and difficulty in movement of the lower limb. In current clinical practice, such conditions are increasingly seen due to sedentary habits and poor posture. Ayurveda offers a different perspective by focusing not only on symptoms but also on the underlying functional disturbances. Among the various treatment approaches, Patra Pinda Sweda is widely used in managing pain and stiffness, yet its mode of action needs clearer understanding. The present conceptual study reviews classical Ayurvedic texts along with modern scientific explanations to understand its therapeutic role in Gridhrasi. The combined effect of heat, oil, and medicated leaves used in this procedure helps in relieving stiffness, improving circulation, and reducing pain. It also supports muscle relaxation and better mobility. From a modern viewpoint, these effects can be related to thermotherapy, improved blood flow, and possible anti-inflammatory action of the herbal components. Based on this understanding, Patra Pinda Sweda appears to be a practical and effective therapy in the management of Gridhrasi, helping to improve both symptoms and functional ability. Keywords: ayurveda, gridhrasi, sciatica, swedan, patrapinda sweda. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
