NEONATAL GUT MICROBIOME AND AYURVEDIC CONCEPTS OF AGNI: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EARLY-LIFE MICROBIAL COLONIZATION, DIGESTIVE FUNCTION, IMMUNITY, AND NEONATAL

Abstract Background: The first year of life is a formative window in which the neonatal gut acquires a dense and functionally consequential microbial community that shapes digestion, metabolism, and immune maturation. Ayurveda addresses this same physiological territory through the doctrine of Agni, the classically described "digestive-metabolic fire" that governs the transformation of ingested substance into nourishment and, ultimately, into Ojas, the vital essence linked to disease resistance (Vyadhikshamatva). Despite conceptual overlap, systematic correlation between these two knowledge systems in the neonatal context remains sparse. Objective: To critically synthesize contemporary evidence on neonatal gut microbiome development with the Ayurvedic understanding of Agni, Ojas, and Kaumarabhritya-based neonatal care, and to evaluate the plausibility, limitations, and translational potential of this integrative framework. Methods: A narrative-integrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus-indexed journals, Frontiers, ScienceDirect, and the AYUSH Research Portal, supplemented by classical Ayurvedic texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Kashyapa Samhita) as represented in peer-reviewed secondary literature. English-language publications from 2018–2026 were prioritized for the biomedical literature, with earlier foundational and classical sources retained where historically necessary. Key Findings: Modern microbiome science and Ayurvedic Agni theory show conceptual convergence at several points: Jatharagni-mediated "gross" digestion parallels enzymatic and gastric processing; Bhutagni-type elemental transformation loosely parallels hepatic/intermediary metabolism of absorbed nutrients; and Dhatvagni-driven tissue nourishment parallels microbial metabolite (short-chain fatty acid)-mediated epithelial and immune programming. Ojas and Vyadhikshamatva correspond functionally, though not mechanistically, to the immune-educating role of the early microbiota. Kaumarabhritya practices such as Stanya-based feeding counsel and Swarna Prashana show partial alignment with modern breastfeeding and immunomodulation science, though the clinical evidence base for the latter remains limited by small trial sizes. Conclusion: The neonatal gut microbiome can be viewed as a plausible, though not proven, functional correlate of Agni activity, with meaningful convergence in the domains of digestion, immunity, and Ojas-linked resilience. This integrative model is presently a heuristic and hypothesis-generating framework rather than an established biological equivalence, and its translational promise depends on rigorous, adequately powered clinical and mechanistic studies.
