Abstract

Background: Varsha Ritu introduces profound environmental shifts that induce significant physiological stress. According to classical Ayurvedic texts, this period is characterized by severe Agnimandya, the accumulation of Kleda, and the subsequent vitiation of Vata and Pitta doshas. To maintain homeostasis, Ayurvedic Maulika Siddhanta prescribe a specific seasonal regimen, explicitly mandating the daily incorporation of Madhu (honey) into the diet. Aim: This conceptual review aims to bridge classical Ayurvedic directives with contemporary scientific evidence, elucidating the exact pharmacological and biochemical mechanisms that validate the prophylactic use of Madhu during Varsha Ritu. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted by critically analyzing classical Ayurvedic literature Brihat Trayi and their commentaries alongside modern pharmacological, biochemical, and nutritional studies sourced from peer-reviewed medical databases. Discussion: The Ayurvedic classification of Madhu as Ruksha (dry) and Kledaghna (moisture-depleting) is corroborated by its high osmolarity and low water activity ( ), which osmotically neutralize seasonal gastrointestinal pathogens. Concurrently, honey's rich profile of exogenous enzymes and prebiotics counteracts Agnimandya by stabilizing the gut microbiome, while its enzymatic generation of hydrogen peroxide ( ) provides critical mucosal defense against monsoon-induced respiratory infections. Conclusion: The directive to consume Madhu in Varsha Ritu is not a mere cultural tradition, but a highly sophisticated, evidence-based prophylactic intervention. By mapping Ayurvedic Karma (action) to modern pathophysiology, this review reaffirms the profound clinical accuracy and contemporary relevance of Maulika Siddhanta in seasonal preventative medicine.
