FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF BILAYER BUCCAL TABLETS OF SALBUTAMOL SULPHATE USING A COMBINATION OF POLYMERS

Abstract

Although salbutamol sulphate is well absorbed from the Gastro Intestinal Tract following oral dosing, it is associated with extensive first pass metabolism which results in decreased bioavailability of the drug. One of the most feasible means of drug delivery for salbutamol sulphate is the buccal drug delivery. Various formulations of buccal drug delivery were developed for salbutamol sulphate using various bioadhesive polymers like carbopol 934P, Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC 3 and 5cps, K4M and K15M) and mannitol as filler, magnesium stearate used as lubricant. All these formulations were prepared by direct compression method. The formulation F7 containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose K4M, K15M, Carbopol 940, and the mannitol was found to be promising, which shows an in vitro drug release of 99.85% in 12 h along with satisfactory results. Thus, from the above results formulation F7was found to be the best formulation for buccal delivery of salbutamol sulphate. Thus, the present study has demonstrated that salbutamol sulphate can be successfully developed as buccal tablets and offers a better route for buccal drug delivery.
