FORMULATION AND IN-VITRO EVALUATION OF GASTRORETENTIVE FLOATING TABLETS OF CIPROFOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE
Sanjeeta Mahat* Anil Prasadh Shah, Junu Silwal Khatri, Simran Adhikari,
Abstract The purpose of this study was to formulate a gastro-retentive floating matrix tablet of Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride for the effective treatment of infections caused by susceptible organism. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic drug. Ciprofloxacin has been selected as the drug of choice owing to the fact that it has bioavailability of only 60%. It is stable at the gastric pH (acidic 1.2) and possesses elimination half – life of 4 hours. It is soluble in acidic medium and thus a floating tablet of the drug would be increase the extent of absorption. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride gastro-retentive tablets were formulated by direct compression method using variable concentration of different grade of polymer such as HPMC K4M, HPMC K15M and HPMC K100M as a viscosity enhancing agent and sodium bicarbonate as a gas generating agent. The resulting formulation has been evaluated for weight variation, thickness, hardness, friability, drug content, floating lag time, floating duration time and invitro drug release for 12 hours. In this study it was concluded that the concentration of sodium bicarbonate effect on floating properties and the concentration and viscosity of the polymer effect on drug release. Formulation containing HPMC K100M at 26% has shown better controlled release. Keywords: Gastro-retentive, Ciprofloxacin, HPMC K4M, HPMC K15M, HPMC K100M. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
