ETHNOMEDICINAL VALUE OF CARDIOSPERMUM HALICACABUM LINN.: A REVIEW

Abstract The herbal medicines occupy distinct position right from the primitive period to present day. The use of plants as a therapeutic material due to their chemical substances of medicinal value is very common. Cardiospermum halicacabum L. is a climbing plant and its flower is one among the ten sacred flowers of Kerala, India. It belongs to Sapindaceae, soapberry family and distributed in tropical and subtropical region of Asia and Africa. Cardiospermin is the active principle and other major compounds identified up to date are apigenin, protocatechuci acid, rutin, calycosin and quercetin. The leaf and stem parts are widely used for various ailments. It has antiinflammatory, anti pyretic, analgesic, anti-parasitic activities.
