SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF MOXIFLOXACIN IN PHARMACEUTICAL BULK AND DOSAGE FORMS

Abstract

A simple, rapid, accurate, and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of Moxifloxacin in bulk and tablet formulations has been developed. The method involves the charge-transfer complexation between Moxifloxacin as n-electron donor with chloranilic acid as - acceptor to give a coloured complex having absorption maximum at 490 nm. Different variables affecting the reaction conditions such as the concentration of chloranilic acid, reaction time, diluting solvents were studied and optimized. Under the optimal conditions, Beer’s law was obeyed (r2 = .9991) in the concentration range of 2-10 μg/ml. The assay limits of detection and quantitation were 0.196 and 0.612 μg/ml respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of commercial Moxifloxacin tablets and the recovery study revealed that no interferences from the common excipients present in the tablets occurred. The results obtained by the proposed analytical method, was compared with that obtained by previously reported UV spectrophotomeric method. Statistical comparison of the results was done with regard to accuracy and precision using student’s t-test and F-test at 95 % confidence level. The results showed that there is no significant difference regarding accuracy and precision, between the two compared analytical methods.
