HISTOPATHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF CLADOPHORA GLOMERATA EXTRACT AND PHYTOL IN SWISS MICE
Lamiaa A. Gharb*, Abdul Latif M. Jawad and Muayad S. Shawkat
Abstract Cladophora glomerata is the most widely distributed macroalga throughout the world’s freshwater ecosystems. The histopathological effects studies of C. glomerata in Iraq is scanty in literature. Thus, in present study, these were covered. The algal samples were collected from the fresh water in the canal around University of Baghdad. The GC- Mass analysis of algal extract and the sections in different organs in mice were done in present study. Our study provides first time histopathological effects of C. glomerata and phytol in kidney ,liver and spleen. Moreover, active chemical compounds in algal extract including phenolic compounds ,alkaloid, terpenoids,Fatty acids and other compounds was described ,Phytol represented the highest one between the other compounds and the percentage area was (43.70%). Alcoholic extract showed massive necrosis ,inflammatory cells infiltration and fibrosis in kidney and hyperplasia in spleen,in addition to the presence of amyloid in both liver and spleen. The pure compound (phytol) showed degenerative changes ,hyperplasia and apoptosis. Furthermore ,the study shows the histological features of extract and phytol using two different doses. These features may help in utilization of this alga and phytol in appropriate dose. The data of this study may help in using this alga as a good natural source of phytol and using them in industries and therapeutics. Keywords: Phytol, Cladophora, amyloid, algae.
