SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES M(II) DERIVED FROM N, O BIDENTATE LIGANDS
Ganesh S. Kulkarni, Priyanka L. Anandgaonker, Sidharth D. Janrao, Digambar D. Gaikwad and Dnyandeo M. Janrao*
Abstract Two bidentate ligands were synthesized by the condensation reaction of isonicotinic acid hydrazide with 4-dimethylamino (LA) and 3- nitrobenzaldehyde (LB). The ligands were reacted separately with acetates of Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) yielding 1:2 (metal:ligand) complexes. The metal complexes formed were expected to have a general formula of [M(L)2(ac)2]xH2O where M = Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II). Such compounds were characterized by different physicochemical techniques like melting point, elemental analysis, FTIR, UVVis spectroscopy, molar conductivity. The free ligands and their metal complexes have been screened for their in vitro biological activities against bacteria and fungi. The metal complexes show more potent activities compared with Schiff base ligands. Keywords: Isoniazid, bidentate ligands, transition metal complexes, metal acetate salts, antimicrobial activity.
