SHORT-TERM OCULAR TOXICITY AND EYE IRRITATION TESTS FOLLOWING APPLICATION OF SHUNTHYADI EYE DROPS – AN AYURVEDIC EYE DROPS IN RABBITS

Abstract Shunthyadi eye drops contain drugs like cow Ghee, Shunthi (Zingiber officinale), Saindhava lavana (rock salt), which are claimed to be effective in Shushkakshipaka (Dry eye syndrome).The present study was undertaken to evaluate the in vivo acute ocular irritation/corrosive effect of Shunthyadi eye drops in rabbit for validation of safety data. Acute ocular irritation/corrosive study was carried out as per standard protocol of OECD 405 guideline in rabbit to develop its safety profile. Shunthyadi eye drops did not cause irritation to mucous membrane of eyes and devoid of any serious toxic effect and clinical changes on lids, conjunctiva, cornea, iris or any ocular parts of rabbits. From present study, it is concluded that Shunthyadi eye drops is safe to administer in Shushkakshipaka (Dry eye syndrome) without ocular irritation/corrosive effect.
