COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY PROFILE OF DRUG RESISTANT AND SUSCEPTIBLE STRAINS OF GRAM NEGATIVE BACTERIA
Vidushi K. Chitalia*, Jaishankar Sharma, Omkar Lele, Shashikant P. Vaidya, Abhay Chowdhary
Abstract The rapid spread of β-lactamases which confer resistance to broadspectrum β-lactams has become a major health problem in the world. It is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality associated with hospital and community acquired infections. Also, the production of β-lactamases has been associated with higher drug resistance. Hence, the present study was carried out to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of ESBL, inhibitor resistant and susceptible strains. ESBL screening and confirmation along with antimicrobial susceptibility test was done according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines using appropriate standards. Out of 46 clinical isolates, 45.65% (n=21) were ESBL producers, 28.26% (n=13) were Inhibitor Resistant isolates while 26.08% (n=12) were susceptible. Inhibitor resistant and ESBL producers exhibited a high degree of resistance to antibiotics (p ˂ 0.001). With the increasing prevalence of ESBL and other β-lactamases, regular monitoring of the antibiotic resistance pattern is crucial. Keywords: ?-lactamases; ESBL; Gram Negative Bacteria; Inhibitor Resistance; MAR index. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
