Abstract

The ethanolic extract of whole plant of murraya koenigii Linn. wasevaluated for its antilithiatic activity in mices. Lithiasis was induced byoral administration of ethylene glycolated water (0.75%) in adult maleSwiss albino mices for 28 days. The ionic chemistry of urine wasaltered by ethylene glycol (EG), which elevated the urinaryconcentration of crucial ions, viz. calcium, phosphorus and proteinthereby contributing to renal stone formation. However treatment withethanolic whole plant extract of murraya koenigii (200 and 300 mg /kg body weight) in group III and IV significantly (p<0.05) reduced theelevated level of these ions in urine. The levels of serum urea, uric acidand creatinine were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in urolithiatic mices. Treatment withplant extract restored the levels and it brought back the values to near normal range inurolithiatic mices. All these observations revealed that ethanolic whole plant extract ofmurraya koenigii has curative effect on stone formation induced by ethylene glycol.

Keywords: Antilithiatic, murraya koenigii, Ethylene glycol, Calcium, Phosphate and Protein.
