HYPOGLYCEMIC EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF PUNICA GRANATUM L. FLOWER IN ALLOXON INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

Abstract

The present study reveals that the oral administration of different doses of ethanolic extract of Punica granatum L. flower for acute and sub acute treatment continued for 14 days led to significant lowering effect on alloxon-induced diabetic rats after the single dose. The reduction in blood glucose was seen at 1h and continuously reduction in blood glucose level with the passing of time, the maximum lowering effect of Std- Glibenclamide and low doses of extract was seen 5th hour in acute treatment. sub acute study, treatment at the end of study, the extract at dose 300 & 400mg/kg of body weight showed significant reduction in blood glucose level, comparable with that of diabetic control group.
