Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIDEPRESSANT ACTIVITY OF LEAVES EXTRACT OF MORINGA OLIEFERA BY USING FST AND TST MODEL ON SWISS ALBINO MICE

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of ethanolic extract of moringa oleifera in mice. In the present study, the antidepressant effect of moringa oleifera was examined using two behavioural models, the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). Depression is a wide spread psychiatric disorder. According to WHO, 450 million people suffer from a mental or behavioural disorder. this amount to 12.3% of global burden of disease and predicted to rise upto 15% by 2020. In traditional system of medicine, many plants and formulation have been used to treat depression for thousands of years. moringa oleifera is known miracle tree its every part having medicinal use for human. The leaves and pods are eaten. The plant is also reported to be medicinally important and almost all part of moringa oleifera tree are considered to possess medical properties and are used in the treatment of ascites, rheumatism and venomous bites and are cardiac and circulatory stimulant. Leaves contain antioxidant properties and are known to cures hallucinations, dry tumour, hiccups and asthma. The root and bark are useful in treatment of heart complaints, eye disease, inflammation, dyspepsia and enlargement of spleen. Adult male Swiss albino mice weighing 25-35 g were used in study. Standard drug (Imipramine) and test drug (Moringa oleifera) were suspended in 5% tween 80. The control, the imipramine (20mg/kg) and Moringa oleifera (200mg/kg, 400mg/kg) respectively were administered. Duration of immobility was noted in both the models.
