Krishna Kumar V.*, Harisha C. R., Shukla V. J. and Manjusha R.

Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is a micro vascular complication of Diabetes mellitus. Diabetic retinopathy is characterised by bleeding vessels in retina and Takra dhara is a treatment method to arrest such bleeding. It is the process of irrigating scalp with Siddha takra (processed butter milk). The ingredients of Siddha takra were evaluated by Pharmacognostical, Preliminary Physicochemical and Phytochemical studies. The powder microscopical study showed the presence of simple and compound starch grains, pitted vessels and sclerides, scalariform vessels, yellowish green coloured content, silica deposits, stone cells, cork cells, pollen grains, and rhomboidal and prismatic crystals. Preliminary physicochemical parameters showed that water soluble extractive value is more than alcohol soluble extractive value. Qualitative analysis of methanolic and water extract showed the presence of tannin, phenolic compounds, alkaloid, steroid, flavonoid and glycoside.

Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, Pharmacognosy, Physico-chemical analysis, Siddha takra, Takra dhara.
