UTILIZATION OF THE PODS OF STEREOSPERMUM TETRAGONUM FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF PHYTOCONSTITUENTS
Kiran Kumar S J and Dr. Ashwini Sanshi
Abstract Stereospermum tetragonum is a medicinal plant belonging to family Bignoniaceae. Stereospermum tetragonum is an important medicinal plant; therefore, it’s planting and conservation has been recommended to prevent its extinction. In the present study we estimate the qualitative analysis and the phytochemical compounds such as steroids, carbohydrates, triterpenoids, coumarines, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, saponins, anthroquinones, Proteins and lipids were screened in pods of Stereospermum tetragonum. Quantitative analysis of phenols, flavonoids and Triterpenoids was further performed. Thin layer chromatography was used to analyze the active Phytoconstituents. Preliminary phytochemical screening of pods were by methanolic extracts which identified 11 major functional groups, amongst them flavonoid, phytosterols, saponins and coumarins. Additionally inorganic elements like iron, chloride and sulphate were identified by total ash analysis. The same extract was used for quantitative determination of total phenolic content (71.99 mg/g), total flavonoid content (73.50mg/g) and total triterpenoids content (13.76 mg/g). For further purification of identified chemical constituents, TLC was performed and it showed remarkable results. The methanolic extract of Stereospermum tetragonum pods contains beta sitesterol and lupeol which are very useful therapeutically and medical use.
