HYPOTHYROID- A SINGLE CASE STUDY

Abstract Nervous system and endocrine system are the two primary communication systems with increasing complexity & differentiation of structure and function. These regulatory mechanisms have assumed increasing importance in the survival of the organism, in its adaptation to the environment & reproduction. These two systems serve as a biological communication network for integration. Any alterations in the activities of either system can lead to soul-harrowing disease. One such disease is Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can result from any of a variety of abnormalities that lead to Insufficient synthesis of thyroid hormones. Increasing trend of hypothyroidism is common to the society, more prevalent among the females. It is not only confined to metropolitan population but also extends to rural and urban areas. Ratio of disease occurrence among females & males is 6:1 & is usually found 10-50 in no. per thousand population. Although there is no direct reference of Hypothyroidism in Ayurveda, we get scattered references in the classics which help us in understanding the underlying pathology. Acharya Charaka’s concept of Asta Nindita Purusha includes many of the endocrinal presentations. Description of Galaganda available in classics simulate with the goitric manifestation of Hypothyroidism. Symptoms seen in the Hypothyroid patients are found in the classical description of different conditions such as Amajeerna, Kaphaja Pandu, Kaphaja Shopha, Avarana and Bahudoshavastha. Vamana karma is one of the best measure for the Kapha disorders as well as it is specifically prescribed in the treatment of Kaphaja Galganda by Sushruta and Vagbhata. So it was selected as one of the measure for the patients of hypothyroidism of this study. As patient got significant result an effort is made to publish the case here.
