Prakash S., Singh P.K., Kumar A., Tiwari S., Gupta N., Dubey R.K. and Dwivedi M.*
Abstract Obesity and its related complication is one of the global wide problems leading to cause more than 53 diseases in India around 30 million people are suffering with obesity. Individual habits, stressful life, wrong dietary habits; sedentary lifestyle is the main cause of diseases. Two different obesity-treatment drugs are currently on the market: Orlistat, which reduces intestinal fat absorption via inhibiting pancreatic lipase; and Sibutramine, an anorectic or appetite suppressant. Both drugs have hazardous side effects, including increased blood pressure, dry mouth, constipation, headache, and insomnia. But no satisfactory treatment is available in conventional system. For this reason, a wide variety of natural/Ayurvedic materials have been explored for their obesity treatment potential. The medicinal plants studied can reduce weight through five basic mechanisms, including stimulating thermogenesis, lowering lipogenesis, enhancing lipolysis, suppressing appetite, and decreasing the absorption of lipids. Furthermore, consumption of reliable medicinal plant extracts in a single form and at an optimum dosage could be a safe treatment for obesity. However, based on reviews, some combinations of certain medicinal plants may result in either lower efficacy or cause unexpected side-effects.
