VITAMIN D LEVELS AMONG CHILDREN WITH SEVERE ACUTE MALNUTRITION.

Abstract Background: Children with malnutrition may have co-existing vitamin D deficiency (VDD), which may be severe. The main objective of study was to evaluate vitamin D levels among children with severe acute malnutrition. Methods: Serum vitamin D levels were evaluated in 100 children with severe acute malnutrition of age between 6 months to 60 months. Results: VDD (vitamin D deficiency) was found in 32 of 100 children (32%). The mean vitamin D level was 68.8 nmol/l. Conclusion: The high prevalence of VDD in malnourished children underlines the need for active surveillance and aggressive management.
