MICROBIAL EVALUATION OF A MARKETED HERBO-MINERAL FORMULATION TRIBHUVAN KIRTI RAS

Abstract

Ayurvedic herbal medicines and their finished herbal products have been used since ancient times to treat a wide range of diseases. WHO survey shows 70-80% of world population rely on non-conventional medicines mainly herbal products for their primary health care. The microbial contaminations of these medicines may reduce or even inactivate the therapeutic activity of the products and has the potential to adversely affect patients. Tribhuvan Kirti Ras is one of the commonly used herbo-mineral formulation for acute or chronic fever related with respiratory tract infections, Present study was performed to assess the pathogenic proliferation in the locally available commercial Tribhuvan Kirti Ras. The pathogenic load was compared with the microbiological standard given by the WHO. The TVAC was found to be 9.3×104, 4.5×104 and 5.8×104 CFU/g in three samples respectively, All three samples were found to be contaminated with the fungi species of Gliodium, Papulospora, Geomyces and Rhizopus as well as Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. The presence of bacteria and fungi in these samples suggested that there is need to improve the quality of manufacturing and labelled the condition of product.
