BIOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION AND GC-MS ANALYSIS OF GRACILARIA EDULIS
Rajakumar R. and Allwin Prem Singh Y.
Abstract The aim of the present study investigated that biochemical constituents like protein, carbohydrate, total lipids and total phenols were analysed from the marine red algae Gracilaria edulis and the methanolic extract of the G.edulis have been investigated by GC-MS to identify the compounds responsible for its therapeutical properties. Among the biochemical constituents, the protein (48.23 ± 0.14 mg/g) content was higher compared to other and followed by total phenolic (26.25 ± 0.1 mg/g) content and also more than 16 compounds were identified. Among the isolated compounds the highest peak area was showed in the 1, 2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, butyl cyclohexyl ester (90%) and lowest peak area was noted in the Eicosame,7-hexyl (4%). GC/MS study indicated that these seaweeds would be a good source for the production of bioactive compounds. Keywords: Red algae, protein, GC/MS, phenol, Gracilaria edulis.
