Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with long-term macrovascular and microvascular complications. Included in these complications is diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is often asymptomatic, but may be evident early in the disease process. This is thought to be due to both better detection and increasing rates of diabetes.2 Diabetes is the leading cause of new onset blindness for people aged 20 to 74 years.
