Abstract

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF 5-(SUBSTITUTED BENZYLIDENE) THIAZOLIDINEDIONE DERIVATIVES

Rekha S.* and Chandrashekhara S.

Abstract

The 2, 4-thiazolidinedione derivatives constitute an important class of heterocyclic compounds for which diverse biological properties such as antibacterial and antifungal, antiviral, antitumor and anti-diabetic have been reported. Our aim was to study and develop a more chemically versatile and diverse thiazolidinediones incorporating the required elements of a suitable pharmacophore consisting of TZDaromatic linker-ester/hydrazide/amine residues.[1] Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are a new class of antidiabetic drugs, having an insulin sensitizing effect in patients with type 2 diabetes. A few 5-[4- (substituted) benzylidene] thiazolidinediones have been designed, synthesized and evaluated as anti-oxidant and oral anti-hyperglycemic agents.[2] In this present study we report the synthesis of several novel analogues 5-(substituted benzylidene) - thiazolidin-4-one derivatives and characterization of the synthesized compound with the help of spectral data viz., IR, NMR and elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds are investigated for their antioxidant activities.

Keywords: Thiazolidinediones, antioxidant, ascorbic acid, DPPH, free radical scavenging activity.
