TOTAL CARBOHYDRATE, LIPID AND PROTEIN CONTENT OF SOME SPECIES OF MARINE CYANOBACTERIA FROM VETHALAI COASTAL REGION, GULF OF MANNAR, INDIA
Kanimozhi R.*, Arvind Prasanth D. and G. Subramanian
Abstract Total carbohydrate, lipid and protein in five species of marine cyanobacteria were quantified. They were collected from the coastal regions of Vethalai, Gulf of Mannar. The five species namely, Oscillatoria formosa, Oscillatoria salina, Phormidium fragile, Phormidium tenue and Lyngbya confervoides. The species grown in ASN III medium with nitrate were harvested at exponential phase. The carbohydrates and protein constituents were analyzed. The analysis showed that maximum amount of total carbohydrate in Lyngbya confervoides (21.26% dry weight) and minimum in Phormidium tenue (9.26% of dry weight). The maximum of 15.32% total lipid was in Lyngbya confervoides. Total lipids were also estimated in all the species of selected marine cyanobacteria. The maximum of 29.25±0.12% and minimum of 21.25±0.12% of protein were presented in Lyngbya confervoides and Phormidium fragile respectively. Keywords: Marine Cyanobacteria, Carbohydrate, Lipid, Protein, Vethalai, Gulf of Mannar. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
