NEUROPROTECTIVE ROLE OF BENINCASA HISPIDA LINN. ON SENILE PLAQUE FORMATION IN COLCHICINE INDUCED EXPERIMENTAL RAT MODEL OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Abstract

The present study was designed to undertaken the protective role of pulp extract of Benincasa hispida Linn. (BH) on senile plaque formation after intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of colchicine in colchicine induced experimental rat model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). After intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of colchicine in colchicine induced experimental rat model of AD produced senile plaques in hippocampus and temporal lobe respectively when compared with control group. But pretreatment with BH pulp extract did not show any senile plaque formation in the hippocampal region. Similar results were obtained in case of saline treated control animal. It is reported that BH has an antioxidant activity on colchicine induced experimental rat model of AD.
