QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METABOLITES OF MUSSAENDA BELLILA L. FROM WESTERN GHATS OF KARNATAKA
Laveena K. B. and *Chandra M.
Abstract The present study was carried out to investigate the primary and secondary metabolites from the plant Mussaenda bellila L. Different solvents viz., water, hexane, ethanol and methanol were used for the extraction. Phytochemical screening of leaf and sepal extracts of Mussaenda bellila L. revealed the presence of primary metabolites like chlorophyll, carbohydrates, protein, lipids, and secondary metabolites like phenol, alkaloids, saponin and flavonoids. The chlorophyll, carbohydrate, amino acids, protein and lipid contents were found high in leaf compared to sepal. The total alkaloid, flavonoid content in the sepal and leaf extracts was found high, where as saponin and phenolic content were found be lower in both the extracts. The results obtained in the present study indicate that the sepal and leaf extracts of Mussaenda bellila L. possess antioxidant properties and have the potential to act as a source of useful drugs.
