Abstract

SCREENING OF ANTIBACTRIAL ACTIVITY OF γ-ALUMINA NANOPARTICLES SYNTHEZIED BY ELECTROCHEMICAL REDUCTION METHOD

Pallavi D. Shelke, Suresh T. Gaikwad and Anjali S. Rajbhoj*

Abstract

In the present work, γ-alumina nanoparticles (γ-Al2O3 NPs) has been generated by electrochemical method and the effect of NPs has been check against two gram positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and two gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi by in vitro agar well diffusion method. γ- Al2O3 NPs were synthesized by electrochemical reduction method using tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB) as electrolyte cum capping agent in an aqueous medium by optimizing current density 10 mA/cm2. The reduction process takes place over a period of 2 hrs. Such nanoparticles were prepared by using simple electrolysis cell in which the sacrificial anode is commercially available aluminium sheet and platinum (inert) foil acts as a cathode. The synthesized γ-Al2O3 NPs were characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometer, termogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS).

Keywords: Electrochemical reduction, Tetraethylammonium bromide, ?-alumina nanoparticles, antibacterial study, agar well diffusion method.
