Abstract

The leaves and root of Mimosa pudica Linn. have been traditionally utilized for the cure of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in India. Objective: Assess the in vivo antihyperlipidemic and antidiabetic activities of M. pudica stem methanol extract (MPme) on Triton WR- 1339 induced hyperlipidemic and high-fat diet fed-streptozotocin (40mg/kg)-induced insulin resistant diabetic rats for 30 days. Methods: The effects of extracts on fasting blood glucose, serum lipid biomarkers, body weight, food and water intakes, plasma insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, urea, creatinine and plasma marker enzymes of liver function were also studied. Results: Triton WR-1339 induced, MPme (250 and 500mg/kg) treated hyperlipidemic rats exhibited significant reduction in lipid profiles (TC: 252.3 and 216.8% mg/dL, TG: 485.9 and 412.0% mg/dL, LDL-C: 108.3% and 97.4%mg/dL) and increase in HDL-C when compared with the hyperlipidemic rats. MPme (250 and 500mg/kg) also showed significant reduction in fasting blood glucose (55.68 and 56.48% mg/dL) and in plasma insulin levels (16.7 and 15.9%μU/ml) when compared with the hyperlipidemic diabetic group. Histopathological analysis of tissues demonstrated the cytoprotective effects of Mpme in diabetic rats. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed the presence of chemical constituents such as rutin and β- sitosterol in the concentrations of 2.86% (W/W) and 1.48% (W/W). Conclusion: The results of the experiments suggested that MPme exerted significant antihyperlipidemic and antidiabetic activities in obesity associated T2DM in rats.
