EFFECT OF NATURALLY INFECTED WITH HAEMOPARASITE TRYPANOSOMES AND AGE ON HAEMATOLOGICAL AND SERUM BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF INDIGENOUS WESTERN HIGHLAND GOAT, ETHIOPIA
Abdata Dame, Eyob Ibrahim and Kibeb Legesse*
Abstract In study area Gerura, South Western Shewa, Oromia Regional Stateof Ethiopia, goats are considered as one of the most importantlivestock. There is lack of information on effects of blood parasiteTrypanosomes and age on some hematological and biochemicalparameters of goat breed in the study area Gerura, therefore, themain purpose of this study was to determine the effects ofTrypanosomes and age on some hemo-biochemical values and thereference baseline data of hemo-bio chemical values of study goatsbreed for clinical interpretation. The study included 141 indigenousgoats aged from 1-6 years of both sexes naturally infected withTrypanosomes. In naturally infected local goats breed withTrypanosomes and age had significant effect on RBC and WBC(p<0.05). However, in those goats free from Trypanosomes, RBC and Hb significantlyincrease for goats at yearling stage while the Monocytes significantly increase for adultgoats (P<0.05). There was no significant age difference for serum biochemical valuesin goats naturally infected with Trypanosomes. But, non-significant differences were alsoobserved for AST and ALP (P>0.05). There were significant age differences for totalproteins in those goats breed free from Trypanosomes. Younger to adult had significantlyhigher total protein (P<0.05) than yearling and older adult stage. There were also nonsignificantlydifferences seen in serum ALP at different age (P>0.05). The valuesdetermined in the present study can be used as reference ranges for the study goats andfor monitoring health and disease diagnosis.
