Abstract

Bowel movements are considered to be the most reliable parameter for assessing the health of children especially in the pre-school and school going age. It is said that irregularity in the bowel movements are related to the occurrence and increase of bowel diseases, such as Grahani Dosha Bowel Syndrome(IBS), Diarrhoea, Constipation, Abdominal discomfort and pain and many other gastro-intestinal disorders. Out of this, IBS is the most commonly occuring Gastrointestinal disorder presented by school going kids. There are several reports and projects focusing on the strong connection between Grahani Dosha bowels and faulty dietary habits and lifestyle in growing children. As per the ancient Ayurvedic texts, Irritant bowel syndrome (IBS) can be clinically correlated with the symptoms of Grahani. In children with faulty dietary habits, Agnimandya is the commonest cause which in turn gives rise to several symptoms associated with Grahani dosha leading to altering episodes of diarrhoea and Constipation. A critical review of all the classical Ayurvedic Samhitas having the reference of grahani dosha vyadhi were studied. Along with it, the latest articles on Irritant bowel syndrome and its relation to faulty diet were studied from journals and databases. The peer critical review of the relation between faulty lifestyle and IBS was studied which showed that there is a strong association between the indulgence of faulty dietary habits and Irritant bowels in school going children due to various metabolic and social risk factors associated with the disorder. Hence, more attention should be given to prevent this disease by encouraging dietary and lifestyle changes in school children.

Keywords: Grahani-dosha Vyadhi, School children, faulty dietary lifestyle, Irritant Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
