FUNGAL CALENDAR DEPICTING DIVERSITY OF VIABLE AEROMYCOFLORA OF BHOPAL

Abstract

Presence of viable fungal spores in air is a matter of great concern for both clinicians and agricultural scientists. As most of the aeromycoflora is either pathogenic or allergenic, a study regarding same was done two decade back in Bhopal. Since than not much work has been done in this field. Therefore, this study was taken up to bring about a current data. An aerobiological survey of mycoaerospora diversity of bhopal was carried out by sedimentation method at Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Air samplings were done at monthly intervals for isolating prevalent fungal spores from four study zones during July 2008 to June 2009. The isolated species were identified from National Center of Fungal Taxonomy, New Delhi. Out of the isolated fungal species, most of them belonged to the class of deuteromycetes followed by members of zygomycetes. A fungal calendar depicting the monthwise fungal spore prevalence in air of Bhopal was prepared. In this study maximum contribution to allergenic species was provided by genus Apergillus niger species that is predominantly present in the air of Bhopal through out the year. Next Dominent species were A. flavus, Alternaria alternata, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium Oxysporum. During this survey nine allergenic fungi and six pathogenic species, were also isolated. Allergenic species were Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, A fumigates, Alternaria alternate, Curvularia lunata, Cladosporium oxysporium, Fusarium oxysporum, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Rhizopus stolonifer. Pathogenic species were Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, A. Fumigatus, Penicillium citri, Rhizopus oryzae and Trychophyton tonsurans.
