ESTIMATION OF TOTAL PHENOL AND FLAVONOIDS CONTENTS OF GOSSYPIUM HERBACEUM
Monika Patel* and R. P. Mishra
Abstract The presence of various types of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, saponins, phenol, flavonoids, proteins, terpenoides and tannin (phytochemicals) in root, stem bark, leaves and seed of Gossypium herbaceum (Family –Malvaceae) has been investigated. The UV Visible spectrophotometric technique, involving Folin-Ciocalteau and aluminium chloride methods respectively for total phenols and flavonoids contents, was used for analysis. Gallic acid was used as standard compound for total phenols and quercetin for total flavonoids. In this study, highest total phenols content (0.145±0.00066 mg GAE/g) was found in seed extract of Gossypium herbaceum, whereas the highest total flavonoid content (0.473±0.00088 mg QE/g) was found in its root extract. Phenol and flavonoids are potentially active phytochemicals and are known for scavenging free radicals. Accordingly, the findings of the present study suggest that Gossypium herbaceum, especially extracts from its seed and root, could be a potential source of natural antioxidant that may have great importance as therapeutic agents in preventing or slowing the oxidative damage of tissues and biomolecules,. Keywords: Gossypium herbaceum, total phenols, total flavonoids, Folin-Ciocalteau, aluminium chloride. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
