ORAL MEDICATED JELLIES – A REVIEW

Abstract Oral medicated jellies developed dated back to 20th century, remain popular among the consumer and hence it has continued commercial production. Oral medicated jellies are palatable solid dosage forms administered in the oral cavity, meant to be dissolved in mouth or pharynx for its local or systemic effect. Oral medicated jellies provide several advantages as pharmaceutical formulations however with some disadvantages. Oral medicated jellies as a dosage form can be adopted for drug delivery across buccal route, labial route, gingival route and sublingual route. Multiple drugs can also be incorporated in them for chronic illness treatments. Oral medicated jellies are available as over the counter medications in different flavor based of mango, pineapple, strawberry, chocolate etc., containing drugs for anaesthetics, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, antihypertensive, sore throat. Once weekly oral medicated jellies was approved in 2012 by the ministry of Health Labour and Welfare of japan as the world’s first drug for osteoporosis in a jelly formulation. The rationale behind the use of oral medicated jellies in International market as one of the most favored dosage form for both male and female sexual dysfunction. This review focuses various aspects oral medicated jellies formulation providing an insight to the formulation scientist on novel application of this drug delivery system.
